Characterization of molecular weight of poly(methyl methacrylate) by dynamic light scattering

Abstract:

In this work, the dynamic light scattering technique was applied to characterize the molecular weight of poly(methyl methacrylate). Three solutions of poly(methyl methacrylate) in ethyl acetate, with respective polymer concentrations of 1 %, 0.75 % and 0.50 %, filtered in membranes of 0.45 μm and 0.22 μm and without filtration were analyzed. The results for the solutions with concentrations of 0.75 % and 0.50 % were above than the polymer’s specification value obtained by gel permeation chromatography. The result closest to the specification value, 120,000 Da, was for the sample with concentration of 0.50 % filtered in membrane of 0.45 μm, with average molecular weight around 140,000 Da.
