Abstract:

Austenitic stainless steels are widely applied in industries demanding hig corrosion resistance parts. Recently mechanical strength for 316L steel has been required mainly to withstand svere tribological conditions. This paper presents a combined surface treatments to enchance the tribological properties of AISI 316L stainless steel with the use plasma nitring folowed by PVD coating – TiN. Nitriding was carried out on a hot wall DC-pulsed reactor at different temperatures to vary the type and thickness of the nitride layer. The TiN coating was obtained by PVD process. Surfaces were characterized by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Vickers micro, nanoindentation and Rockwell C identation. Nitring was effective for increasing the hardness to values greater than 1,000 HV. The increased deph of the nitride laver improves the effect of load support for the hard coating of TiN, improved coating adhesion on the substrate. This benefit is due to an approximation of the mechanical properties of nitrided surface and the coating, evaluated by the ratio H/E.
