Incorporation of alternative conductive particles in zinc-rich paints and its influence on mechanical properties and corrosion protection

Abstract:

Zinc-rich paints have a high concentration of metallic zinc and are widely used for corrosion protection of carbon-steel substrates, especially in aggressive environments. These epoxy-based paints have a high electrical conductivity which offers cathodic protection to the substrate. However, the high concentration of zinc provides a loss of mechanical properties in the film, such as cohesion and adhesion. Thus, the present work shows the study related to the modification of zinc-rich paints with the incorporation of zinc with different morphologies (spherical nanoparticles and lamellar) and conductive polymeric particles, aiming at improving the mechanical properties of the paint without compromising its corrosion protection efficiency. Pull-off tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical property and open circuit potential measurements to evaluate the electrochemical performance. The results showed an increase of 57 %, 63 %, and 64 % in pull-off values for paints prepared with nanoparticulated zinc, lamellar zinc, and conductive polymeric particle, respectively, when compared to a commercial zinc-rich paint considered as a reference. Open circuit potential results indicated that all modified paints offered cathodic protection to the steel surface, with potential values below -0.85 V (saturated calomel electrode) for 1000 h of immersion is a salt solution, except for coating prepared with conductive polymeric particle, which showed potential values below -0.85 V (saturated calomel electrode) for 975 h.
