Interpretation of potential measurements of three embedded rabars in prismatic concrete test specimens

Abstract:

The corrosion of rebars is a common issue in structures exposed to marine environments. Test procedures for corrosion resistance evaluation of rebars embedded in a prismatic concrete specimen are described in ASTM A955 (2019) and ASTM G109 (2013) standards. In these tests, one bar is electrically connected through a resistor to two short-circuited rebars, the first one acting as an anode and the second two as cathodes. Each standard suggests a different way of measuring the potential of the rebars to evaluate the corrosion. The aim of this work is demonstrating the differences in both methods of measuring the rebar potentials in laboratory corrosion tests based on these standards and to discuss the results based on cathodic protection principles
