Experimental assessment of noise in public transportations system in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo on business trips

Abstract:

In large cities, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), noise has become a major factor in environmental degradation and quality of life. Evaluation studies about noise in public transportation modes in several countries have shown Leq dB(A) sound pressure levels up to 90 dB(A). Those values are considered high and potentially trigger hearing and non-hearing diseases in the population. The Urban Mobility Survey, performed by the São Paulo Metro in 2017, released that 41.4 million daily commuting trips are made between all modes of transportation whose work is the main reason for been done. This work evaluated the sound pressure levels present in the public transportation system in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo by using a noise dosimeter. The sound pressure levels of 22 trips in route where it was used more than one mode of transport were continuously assessed which included transfers between one and the other. The acoustic descriptors assessment was Leq dB(A), Daily noise dose D (%) and NEN dB(A) according to Brazilian occupational hygiene standard NHO-01 (2001).
