Abstract:
Most of the methodologies used in the characterization of solid biofuels are based on the procedures described for coal, coke and wood, which have a more stable physical structure when compared to biomass. Organizations such as ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) have been elaborating standardized methods for characterizing biomass in order to establish appropriate analysis parameters for the diversity of these materials.
Characterizing the physical-chemical properties of biomass is extremely important to assess the feasibility of its use for the production of bioenergy. In this work, the sugarcane bagasse was evaluated by two types of sampling methodologies, aleatory and quarter methods, and after this separation, the samples were prepared in a knife and cryogenic mill. After these milling process, immediate analysis (moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon) and elementary analysis (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur and inorganics) were determined by ASTM and ISO standards. Student’s t test was used to
compare sampling methods and properties evaluated by ASTM. Properties such as volatile matter and ash showed significantly different results when evaluated by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) one way, between the ASTM and ISO methodologies in the different types of milling studied, these were treated by the Tukey method. The heterogeneity of the samples was one of the main factors for the difference in the results found. The sampling method influenced not only the achievement of representative results, but also the final application of this biofuel in an energy conversion process.
