Development of a maneuvering simulator for navigation safety assessment of fluvial convoys

Abstract:

The safety of fluvial convoy’s navigation is a relevant issue due to the constant economic pressure to increase the carried volume of cargo. In this work, a two-dimensional maneuvering simulator was developed employing the point-based dynamic approach. Additional implementation was necessary in order to better represent propeller and rudder effects on the vessel’s motions. Calm water results were compared to full scale experimental data and presented satisfactory match. Finally, the inclusion of an environmental module allowed
the maneuver’s simulation in harsh conditions, with the possibility of inputting the river’s current in the model.
