Stress corrosion of metals and alloys

Abstract:

This paper was prepared due to the scarcity of Brazilian technical literature regarding stress corrosion cracking of metals and alloys as well as because this knowledge is very important for the metallurgical sector more specifically for the engineers responsible for structure or equipment integrity in which metallic materials are used stressed at levels close to their yield strength. A brief description of the general characteristics of stress corrosion cracking is presented as well as the environment and the conditions under which stress corrosion cracking occurs. Finally, the latest theories related to stress corrosion mechanisms are discussed.
