Abstract:

The study of soluble salts, especially chloride ions, as contaminants on metal surfaces to be coated, has been realized for many years. Besides accelerate corrosion, the presence of soluble salts can lead to premature failure of the coating if the degree of contamination on the metallic surface has reached critical limits. The major problem encountered by researchers is precisely determining these limits. In laboratories, in studies aimed at determining them, it is necessary to artificial contamination of samples. In this new work sheet and tube samples already corroded, both carbon steel, were artificially contaminated aimed at achieving predetermined levels of chloride in their surfaces. After contamination, the samples were painted and performance of a coating system used for interior painting of pipelines, was assessed by testing adherence before and after immersion in distilled water. The results were evaluated and related to contamination levels.
