Assessment of automated fiber placement coverage generation algorithms

Abstract:

The automated fiber placement process has been developed to allow manufacturing of complex shape structural composite parts. In order to achieve high process repeatability, numerical control (NC) machines or robotic platforms are used, and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software is employed for generation the coverage (i.e., the machine’s head paths over a mandrel surface), optimizing the manufacturing sequence and generating the NC or robotic machine code. In this work, several algorithms are employed in the coverage generation of a complex part, representative of a rear fuselage section. The results show that there is a compromise between minimizing gaps/overlaps and minimizing fiber angle deviation, and the coverage generation is strongly dependent on the manufacturing strategy.
