Brazilian Standards and ISO standards for pallets: a reflection

Compartilhe:
Abstract:

The main functions of a pallet are to bear loads during storage, to speed up cargo handling, to optimize
the space by using of stacking structures and to provide access to individual cargo units in the distribution. As a complex structure, tests must be employed to determine whether it has the necessary quality to perform its functions. There is a profusion of pallet manufacturers and a lot of raw materials which can be used to make them. Currently, there are pallets made up of wood, plastic, aluminum, steel or corrugated board as well as pallets assembled from combined structures. Considering the need and the importance of knowing the performance of pallets and the existing standardized methods, this study brings a review of the Brazilian standards and compares them to the standards series ISO 8611 – Pallets for material handling which is currently the most worldwide accepted standard for international trading. As a conclusion, this work suggests a revision in the form and contents of the Brazilian standards, assuming the cited ISO series as the basis.
