The facades with large glazed areas are becoming common in office buildings of major Brazilians urban centers and with little or no external shading. For other hand, there has been a demand for greater energy efficiency in these buildings, either by labeling PROCEL EDIFICA, either by LEED certification. Specifically the label LEED specifies compliance with the requirements of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 for various elements of the envelope, especially for the glazing (solar factor). This paper’s main objective is to analyze the impact of the solar factor on the reduction of demand for apace thermal load, with reference to the requirement of this Standard and present some glazing solutions to improve facades energy efficiency. A market survey was done looking for typical glazing solution and architecture project of commercial building designed and built in the last ten years in São Paulo. Three types of standard office building designed and built in the last ten years in São Paulo. Three types of standard office building floor plans were identified and were simulated with EnergyPlus. It was found that the solar factor strongly impacts on the reduction of the space thermal load in buildings with low occupancy, but affects less strongly the thermal loads from densely occupied builds and these effected by the building floor area. The adoption of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 is generally relevant to reduce thermal loads, however their adoption requires and analysis of the relation benefit/cost heavily occupied buildngs.
