Simulations of Laminar-Tubulent transition in foils using CFD

Abstract:

This paper presents an initial CFD study of transitional flow simulations using 𝛾−𝑅𝑒𝜃 turbulence model. The numerical model was validated with flat plate experiments present in the literature, and a modification in one of the correlations is proposed. Drag and lift coefficient comparisons were also made for foil simulations in low Reynolds regime with experimental data and with different turbulent models. The foils used were, initially, glider airfoils and later a section of a propeller blade. For this study only two dimensional and steady state simulations were performed. With the analysis presented, the same methodology is intended to be used in future works for three dimensional flows. It is expected that this study will allow a more representative numerical analysis of propellers and hulls using 𝛾−𝑅𝑒𝜃 transitional model.
