Abstract:

Structures, equipment and pipelines used in oil and gas industry are ussually exposed to the atmosphere or are buried in natural soil and thus they are subject to corrosion damages. Traditionally, the corrosion control in buried pipelines is done by means of organic coatings associated with cathodic protection. Although this combination proves to be effective, in recent years, failures in service have been observed, even on coated and cathodically protected pipeline. Some of these failurtes have been attributed to the interference of stray DC or AC electric current, but are other sources of demages, such as lightning. It is known that lightning causes demages on metallic roofs. However, specifc studies on the effect of lightning on other metallic strucutres and equipment are rare. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of lightniong on metallic materials. Samples of coated carbon steel pipes were submitted to electric discharges in order to simulate the lightning continuing current. After that, the tested samples were characterized by means of visual examination, metallographic examination and microprobe analyses with the aid of a scanning electron microscope by field emission (FEG-SEM). This paper discusses the characteristics of the damage caused by electric discharges applied on coated steel samples. The influence of the magnitude and time of the lightning continuing current, the type of electrode and the presence of a small amopunt of soil on the samples was also studied.
