Geochemical analysis of superficial soils of a contaminated site with hexachlorocyclohezame (HCH)


The paper presents the geochemical analysis employed using statistical survey of an investigation of superficial soils from a contaminated site by isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH). The study site is located in Santo Andre – SP, Brazil, and has 7 cells constructed 3 m deep for storage of waste containing HCH. In total, 94 samples were collected from topsoil in neighboring condominiums to the area of the cells and 83 samples were collected in the immediate surroundings of the cells. A statistical analysis based on the concentrations determined in replicate of the isomers α, β, γ and δ by gas chromatography was performed by determining the background values, which are those corresponding to the Percentile 50 and the anomaly are those corresponding to the Percentile 95. Thus, it was possible to obtain the contour maps of concentration for each isomer and compare them with the intervention values provided by the environmental agencies. In general, the anomaly areas detect above the Percentile 95 outweigh areas of contamination plumes (considering intervention values for residential use), as expected, indicating that the geochemical analysis is more embracing. It was observed that there is a tendency of the samples considered anomalous and contaminated appear in the same and / or similar sampling points for different isomers of HCH investigated, confirming the validity of both the statistical method employed, as for sampling, preservation and analysis employed. It was concluded that this type of analysis could be an additional tool of investigation in cases of contamination of complex sites, where are different types of polluting sources, soils, rocks, watersheds and have undergone many human intervention over time.
