Brazilian standard sand

Brazilian standard sand is a reference material used by all Brazilian laboratories that perform physicomechanical tests of Portland cement, both for the control of production processes by cement manufacturers and by building materials laboratories in general. The required use of Brazilian standard sand as a reference material is established by ABNT NBR Standard 7215: 1996 – Portland cement test: Test method, which is used in the molding of test bodies to classify cement according to its mechanical compressive strength, i.e., Class 25, 32 or 40 MPa.

The production of Brazilian standard sand requires specific control of processes and materials, involving physicomechanical and petrographic tests. These tests require technical and laboratory qualifications and involve multidisciplinary areas related to geological survey, mineralogy and production technology for building materials. IPT has been responsible for the production and supply of this material since 1982, as established by ABNT NBR 7214: 1982 – Standard sand for cement testing.

Due to the standardized characteristics of Brazilian standard sand, its use has also been introduced to characterize Brazilian lime, as established by ABNT NBR Standard 9290: 1996 – Hydrated lime mortars: Determination of water retention; ABNT NBR 9207: 2000 – Hydrated lime mortars: Determination of sand incorporation in Voss plastomer; ABNT NBR 9205: 2001 – Hydrated lime mortars: Determination of stability.

This material is supplied in 25 kg bags, separated according to the following granulometric fractions: coarse (#16), medium coarse (#30), medium fine (#50) and fine (#100).
