Geoenvironmental evaluation and guidelines for sustainable engineering interventions

The public and private sectors need technological solutions for critical problems resulting from interventions in the physical environment, which may affect the quality of soil, surface and underground waters and of the environment in general. Engineering works such as airports, agribusinesses, sanitary landfills, roads, ports, urban projects and industrial units, are forms of land use and occupation, whose construction, functioning, and possible deactivation phases involve a series of technological processes. These processes may include earth excavation, landfills, watercourse crossings, etc. which may lead to environmental impacts. Such activities are associated with a number of management instruments (permits, recovery plans for degraded areas, strategic environmental assessment, life cycle analysis, environmental analysis and auditing system, etc.), which are based on geoenvironmental evaluation.

IPT identifies and characterizes physical environment processes (erosion, silting, landslides, carstic formation, physicochemical interactions in water and soil, etc.) occurring in the study area to simulate the effect of the technological processes involved in each operation and enterprise. Once these impacts have been characterized, mitigation and monitoring measures are established, organized in environmental management programs aimed at maintaining the environmental quality of the affected area.
