For over 30 years, the Electrical and Optical Equipment Laboratory (LEO) has being working with the development and integrity tests of electric and optical products for domestic and foreign markets and Research & Development & Innovation ( R&D&I) projects.
Optical
The Laboratory optical area operates in the visible, ultraviolet and infrared spectrum, with the following activities:
Electrical Materials and Enclosure
The Laboratory deals with characterization of electrical conductors and insulators regarding superficial and volumetric resistivity and conductivity.
For safety reasons, all electrical equipment, exposed to dusty and humid conditions shall be tested for evaluating the degree of protection against impact, dust and water.
The Laboratory applies tests according to NBR-6146, IEC 60529 and IEC 60598 NBR, offering technical support to adapt electrical products to the standards.
Safety and performance of electrical and optical equipment
The Laboratory conducts tests on various electronic equipment with conformity testing purposes. Many of these tests are accredited by Cgcre/Inmetro and can be used for compulsory certification in Brazil.
The Institute provides technical support for the suitability of products to safety standards. Among the main tested products, the followings are included:
It also conducts tests of stand-by input power for audio, video and computer equipments.
Electromagnetic Compatibility
The electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is required for export and for some compulsory areas in Brazil, especially for electrical equipment and legal metrology. The IPT has recently acquired a full-compliance semi-anechoic chamber for EMC testing. The Lab provides technical support for solving problems.
The main tested product families are:
The basic immunity standards are IEC 61000-4 family-x. The objective of the tests conducted according these standards are to verify whether the tested equipment supports normal ambient electromagnetic interferences without causing safety risks.Ler foneticamente

- Measurement of equipment irradiance in the visible, ultraviolet and infrared spectrum , including equipment used in health services and personal protection;
- Measurement of occupational exposure to irradiance;
- Conformity testing of lighting fixtures and lamps, including LEDs;
- Characterization of materials and of signaling and displaying equipment;
- Calibration of refractometers, spectrometers, radiometers, optical filters and light meter.
