Prediction of gasoline octane using fast and non-destructive technique

Abstract:

The octane number corresponds to the antiknock property of gasoline. The determination of the RON (research octane number) and MON (motor octane number) parameters of gasoline is performed using the standard CFR (Cooperative Fuels Research) engine test method specified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). As a method of high complexity and high engine operating costs, alternative methodologies using mid-infrared spectroscopy associated with multivariate analysis could serve both for online prediction of octane parameters, as well as for collaborating in the functional adjustments parameters of the CFR engine. This work aims to present the correlation between the analysis methods available at the Laboratory of Bioenergy and Energy Efficiency (LBE), of the Institute for Technological Research (IPT), using the CFR engine (reference method) and the portable infrared measurement analyzer medium, Petrospec GS1000 Plus VOC (alternative method). Although, statistically, the results obtained by the two methodologies did not show significant differences, differences were observed for some samples that were higher than the reproducibility of the reference methods. The results show that it is possible to use the alternative methodology for screening processes and that model optimizations are still needed to increase the accuracy of predictions.
