Emission potential of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)

Abstract:

Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are chemicals that were largely used as flame retardants in polymeric materials for the electro electronic industry worldwide. However, Brazil has never produced nor imported those substances to be used in the products manufactured in the country. The over 7,000 analyzes conducted by the Laboratory of Chemistry and Manufactured Products of the Institute for Technological Research, within the scope of the RoHS directive, showed a very low non-compliant index for the presence of PBBs/PBDEs in the products exported by Brazil and, therefore, the low emission of those compounds for the environment by the national industry. In the other hand, the recurrent detection of those and some new flame retardants in environmental matrices in Brazil, points to the intake of those substances from outer sources, such as imported products which does not pass through the same technical barriers as the Brazilian products.
