Abstract:

Many incentive policies are been adopted internationally to stimulate the use of solar water heating systems in the built environment. Among them, in many countries, laws and regulations have an important role. Recently, Brazil is following this trend by implementing many solar thermal incentive laws. An example is the São Paulo Solar Regulation that included, since January 2008, in the city Building Code the obligation to install solar thermal, completely or only infrastructure, in new buildings in the municipality. The Regulation requires that solar installation provides at least 40% of the hot water demand. However, when it is proved by a technical report that this solar fraction is not possible to be met, the building is dispensed with obligation. Thus, the lack of available area in the building roof has great relevance. Considering that the Regulation has its own solar system sizing method, this work aims to analyses if the sizing method included in the São Paulo Solar Regulation tends to overestimate the actually required roof area base on the internationally recognized F-Chart method. This would raise the probability of dispensing with regulation. Simulations run for many building, collectors and solar installation configurations proved the fact.
