Potencial sediment production in Alto Tietê Basin, São Paulo, SP

Abstract:

The Alto Tietê Basin has serious problems related to water resources, much of them resulting from poor land-use and land-cover management, inefficient housing policies, lack of resources to improve the sanitation conditions, among others. As a result of human interventions without proper planning, intensifies of erosion and landslides development (acceleration), especially in urban expansion areas and less favorable land-cover, setting a critical framework of degradation areas. This situation causes the large amounts of sediment production that contributes to siltation of streams, especially the Tietê and Pinheiros rivers, reservoirs supply and thus promoting the occurrence of floods.
