Development of cutting tool in functionally gradient materials with six layers

Abstract:
The aim to present the conception of cutting toll in functionally gradient material (FGM) with six layers in the substrate. Thereby, three cutting tool materials were used (Al2O3-ZrO2, Al2O3-TiC and WC-Co), so that two parts were gotten, white and mixed ceramic graded with cemented carbide. The samples were prepared to get two sets with workpieces sintered had their relative density, microstructure and thermal residual stress evaluated. The results showed higher density in sample set treated at 1300ºC, besides better microstructural presentation (absence of cracks) and therml residual stress.
