The evaluation of lighting performance in buildings must take into account both natural and artificial light. In both cases, requirements of human visual comfort must be observed, which include factors such as suitable illumination for the activity undertaken and a dazzle-free visual field. Optimization of the use of natural light is also an important part of energy savings in buildings with artificial lighting. Building design should consider the availability of natural light at the site, as well as the luminous properties of the building’s components. Considering these factors, IPT prepares recommendations for the correct positioning and dimensioning of openings and solar protection of the building, as well as adequate setup of artificial lighting systems. In Brazil, the procedures of the ABNT NBR 15575-2008 standard are applied to evaluate the luminous emittance performance of buildings.
