The handling qualities of a ship can be measured by its ability to maintain a stable course, to change course, to maintain its dynamic position (in waves, winds and currents) and to maneuver safely in port.
Good handling ability leads to lower operating costs of the ship, since it represents lower added resistance in maneuvers, shorter time in port calls and less assistance from tugboats. Moreover, the perfect synchronism between directional control and rudder angles during maneuvers represents a fundamental factor for the ship’s safety.
Once the ship’s steering system has been selected, simulations and tests with models in the Testing Tank and Cavitation Tunnel can be performed to evaluate the handling of the ship, based on standard maneuvers or specific maneuvers developed for each design.
