Evaluation of multiple extrusions on the flow properties of HIPS and its correlation with structural changes

Abstract:

Recycling of plastics bring economic benefits for society and contributes to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfill. Therefore, recyclability of a material is a major environmental factor to be evaluated in the development of new materials, such as nanocomposites. In this study, neat HIPS and HIPS with 3 wt% of Closite 20A were processed up to 4 extrusion cycles in a single screw extruder with Maddock mixing element. The samples were characterized by melt flow index (MFI) and by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Values of melt flow index showed that the flow properties of HIPS remained unchanged until the fourth cycle extrusion even with the addition of clay. Likewise, FTIR spectra showed no significant structural changes.
